Warning Signs of Oral Cancer

If you have ever noticed an oddly shaped or coloured spot in your mouth, you might have wondered, "Do I have oral cancer?" Although most spots like these are usually harmless, it still pays to be aware of the signs and symptoms of oral cancer. Our dental centre in Ottawa offers comprehensive oral cancer evaluations. We can answer any questions you may have about warning signs of oral cancer.

What is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer is cancer that occurs in or around the mouth, upper throat, tongue, or lips. It develops when a group of cells grows uncontrollably and causes damage to the surrounding tissue. It usually starts out as a painless white spot that over time thickens and creates a crust. It may develop ulcers or red, raised areas.  Treatments for oral cancer can include surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, the lifetime risk of developing oral cancer is about 1 in 60 for men and 1 in 140 for women.

Warning Signs of Oral Cancer
It is important to be aware of the warning signs of oral cancer. If you notice any of the following symptoms that do not go away or continue for more than two weeks, make an appointment with your dentist at the Upper Hunt Club Dental Centre in Ottawa:

• Red, white, or speckled patches on the lips or mouth
• Raised bumps, sores, or thickened areas in the mouth
• Feeling like there is a persistent lump in your throat
• Pain or numbness of the teeth, lips, or jaw
• Unexplained bleeding
• Voice changes or chronic sore throat
• Difficulty speaking, chewing, or swallowing
• Bite changes
• Persistent ear pain, especially on one side

Men are more likely to develop oral cancer than women, especially men over the age of 50.

What to Do If You Suspect Symptoms of Oral Cancer
First, don't panic. If caught early, oral cancer is very treatable. If you think you may have symptoms of oral cancer, make an appointment at the Upper Hunt Club Dental Centre in Ottawa right away. Your dentist will ask you questions about any new or concerning symptoms you may be experiencing. The dentist will also examine your mouth, lips, tongue, and throat to determine if there any concerning or pre-cancerous lesions. Based on the findings, your dentist may refer you to a specialist for further testing, or wait and see if any concerning spots go away on their own. Together, you and your dentist can come up with a plan to evaluate and treat any possible oral cancers. It is important to keep your regularly scheduled dental appointments so that new issues can be treated quickly.

How To Prevent Oral Cancer
People most at risk for developing oral cancer fall into two main categories: 1) those who have a history of chronic tobacco or alcohol use and 2) those with exposure to the human papilloma virus (HPV-16). There is also a smaller group of people who develop oral cancer with no apparent cause, although this is thought to be linked to genetic or environmental factors. With this in mind, the best way to prevent oral cancer is to control as many of these risk factors as possible:

• Limit alcohol use to no more than two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women.
• Avoid tobacco use, or stop smoking if you currently smoke.
• If you are eligible, get the HPV vaccine.
• Avoid prolonged sun exposure and use sunblock with an SPF of at least 30 on your face, lips, nose, and ears.
• Avoid eating or chewing betel nuts, which have been linked to mouth cancers.
• Eat a healthy diet that includes lots of fruit and vegetables.
• Get yearly examinations from your dentist.
• Let your doctor and dentist know if you have any family history of oral cancer.
