The simple answer: wearing a retainer is a long-term commitment. In fact, wearing it properly is just as important as wearing braces or aligners in the first place.
Why Do You Need a Retainer?
Once braces or aligners have moved your teeth into their ideal positions, the surrounding gums and bone need time to adjust and stabilize. Without a retainer, your teeth will naturally begin to move back toward their original misaligned positions - a process known as orthodontic relapse. Retainers help hold your teeth in their new places while the bone and soft tissues adapt.
How Long Should You Wear It?
Initially, your dentist may recommend full-time retainer wear for the first 3 to 6 months following the removal of braces or aligners. This usually means wearing the retainer all day and night, only removing it to eat, brush, or clean the device. This is the most critical time to prevent relapse.
After this period, many patients transition to night-time wear only, often indefinitely. Yes—indefinitely. Teeth can continue to shift subtly throughout life due to natural aging, pressure from chewing, and other factors. Wearing your retainer just a few nights a week after the initial phase helps keep your smile aligned for the long run.
What Types of Retainers Are Available?
There are two main types of retainers:
• Removable retainers (like Hawley or clear plastic retainers): Easy to clean and convenient, but they must be worn consistently.
• Fixed retainers (bonded to the back of your teeth): Invisible and always working, but they require careful brushing and flossing.
Your dental team will recommend the best option based on your treatment plan and lifestyle.
What Happens If You Stop Wearing Your Retainer?
Skipping retainer use - even for a short period - can lead to visible changes in your smile. Teeth can shift, bite issues may reappear, and you might need additional orthodontic treatment to fix the problem. It’s a common (and costly) mistake.
