Why Invisalign is Better than Traditional Braces

Thanks to the success of Invisalign, traditional braces will soon be a thing of the past. The benefits of Invisalign are numerous, ranging from comfort and appearance to diet and maintenance requirements.

Made from soft plastic trays, Invisalign doesn't force patients to have a mouth full of metal. Whereas wire braces tend to snag against the cheeks and lips, painfully tearing the tissues in the mouth, these soft trays are much more comfortable. Invisalign also works more gently, exerting much less force than wire braces. Plus, the plastic trays use less pressure; Invisalign has been shown to work faster than wire braces. In fact, it has been shown to achieve in eighteen months what often takes years with traditional braces.

Once traditional braces are applied, they are set for a long period of time. Because they are not removed, the teeth cannot be properly cleaned and become more susceptible to damage, such as demineralization and decay. The collapse in oral hygiene can also have adverse (often painful) effects on the roots of the teeth, as well. Additionally, wire braces prevent the doctor from being able to take accurate X-rays, leaving him/her with a limited view of the patient's changing oral landscape. With Invisalign, the doctor can remove the trays to provide better hygiene and accurate care.

With Invisalign, patients do not need to worry about their physical appearance changing, as Invisalign is unnoticeable whereas wired braces really bring attention to the mouth. Invisalign allows patients to keep their natural image, however braces are very noticeable. Invisalign allows patients to get straight teeth without their treatment process being obviously noticed by their peers, employers, or friends.

Out of all of the benefits of Invisalign, though, the lack of food restrictions might take the cake for patients. Wire braces require a complete diet change in order to avoid damaging the hardware. Chewy foods stick, hard foods can damage the wiring, and anything with crumbles cannot so elegantly become stuck lodged in the individual pieces. With Invisalign, however, patients remove the plastic trays while eating, enabling them to choose whatever they wish without compromising the teeth-straightening process.
