Tooth Decay

There are measures we take in order to keep up our oral health. There are also many consequences of not maintain good oral care and one of them is tooth decay. Tooth decay is preventable and treatable in the case that it does occur.

What is Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay is when the outer, hard surface (enamel) of the tooth starts deconstructing. This is when cavities take place on a tooth or many teeth. When the tooth starts to decay, it can lead to needing treatment. It can get worse as time goes by if it is not being treated.

How Does Tooth Decay Occur?
Tooth decay can happen from eating sugary, sticky foods, and not brushing your teeth often- the acid in foods will also sit on the teeth. Plaque will buildup on teeth from saliva, bacteria, food, and drinks. While these particles sit on the teeth, plaque will form and start deconstructing the enamel on the teeth.

What are Treatment Options?
Treatment options for tooth decay can vary depending on the stage. If the decay is at a very early stage, it can be reversed with fluoride treatments. However, if it is past this stage, more in depth treatment could be necessary. There could be a need for a filling, crown, root canal, or extraction of the tooth.

How can you Avoid Tooth Decay?
The best way to avoid tooth decay is by brushing your teeth regularly, flossing regularly, and going to your dentist for cleanings and oral health visits. Visiting your dentist often can help with detecting any decay that might be reversible before it gets worse. Staying away from sugary drinks and foods can also help in the prevention of tooth decay. Teeth should be brushed twice a day and you should floss at least once a day to get between the teeth. Avoiding snack food with a lot of carbohydrates and sugar will aide in keeping your teeth clean as well.

Taking care of teeth is not always the easiest thing to do. This is why regularly brushing flossing, using a fluoride based mouthwash, and regularly visiting the dentists are great for prevention of tooth decay.
