Tips for Teaching Kids to Brush Their Teeth

We all know the importance of teaching children about oral health. Let's be honest: It's not always easy, but the long-term reward is well worth it. How can you help your little ones learn to brush their teeth? Here are 5 suggestions to consider.

Make it Fun
Kids love to play, so one of the best ways to motivate them to do something important is to make a game out of it. With a little creativity, you can find ways to make brushing their teeth enjoyable. For example, you could give them a spare toothbrush and have them brush the teeth on their dolls or stuffed animals while you brush your kids' teeth.

Set a Good Example
Let your children see you regularly brushing your teeth, and they'll be more likely to do it themselves. In fact, you might try to make this a family bedtime tradition. Kids love that sort of thing.

Buy Toothpaste Made for Kids
Often, this toothpaste comes in fun flavours that kids look forward to having in their mouths. Kids will be more motivated to brush their teeth if they know they will use good tasting toothpaste.

Reward Them
You could make up a chart to post in the bathroom or kitchen, listing your kids' names and a checkbox for each day of the week. Let them check off the box each time they've finished brushing their teeth. Just like adults, kids enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from checking something off a to-do list! When the chart is full, reward them with something they find enjoyable. Caution: It's probably best not to make candy the reward!

Stay Positive
Avoid motivating your children with fear or threats. Rather than warning them that their teeth will fall out if they don't brush their teeth, talk about all the benefits they stand to gain if they do brush. Emphasize positive benefits such as having a healthy smile and good-smelling breath.

These are just a few of the things you can do to help your children develop the important habit of brushing their teeth. To make sure your child has good oral health visit the Upper Hunt Club Dental Centre located in South Ottawa. Contact us today to book an appointment.
