Foods to Avoid with Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive teeth occur when the dentin layer of teeth get exposed, resulting in the nerve centre being exposed. This can cause afflicting pain when eating certain types of food or drinking certain drinks. Sensitive teeth can be the result of tooth decay, worn tooth enamel, tooth erosion, or even problems associated with a cavity filling.

While there are steps you can take to strengthen your teeth, the most immediate way to avoid the pain of sensitive teeth is to avoid the food and drinks that bother them.

Cold Foods

Generally, teeth sensitivity will start out in response to cold. When cells in a tooth are exposed to cold air or drinks, it can cause a sudden, sharp pain. Putting ice in a drink can be hurtful, even simple pleasures like ice cream can become a pain.

Hot Foods

As cold sensitivity turns to hot, it usually means that the decay or problems in your teeth are increasing. It can also be a sign that a cavity is forming. One of the biggest culprits for heat sensitivity is coffee. It’s best to let hot foods and drinks such as soup, tea, and chili to cool down before consuming them.

Acidic Foods

Acidic foods can wreak havoc on sensitive teeth. Not only do they cause pain, but they can also contribute to the deterioration of your teeth. The prime acidic foods to include are tomatoes and citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, and mandarins.

Sugary Foods

Sugar can also have adverse effects on teeth, as well as cause pain to sensitive teeth. Hard candy is definitely something to avoid. Another major problem for sensitive teeth is soda. Soda, ironically, falls into three of the categories. Everyone knows soda is sugary, and, more often than not, is usually consumed cold. What people may not realize, diet soda actually contains its own acid, which can further weaken the tooth's enamel and add to tooth decay.

Remember, sensitivity in teeth may go away temporarily, but it will never completely disappear until the actual issues with your teeth are addressed. Until then, it is best to avoid these foods if you have sensitive teeth.
