Bone Grafting and Dental Implant Surgery

Bone grafting is a technique that can be used in conjunction with dental implant surgery. However, it will take a dental surgeon to decide who is a good candidate for the procedure and which method is best in each case, with the patient's dental and overall health among the determining factors.

Understanding Dental Implants
Dental implants have become the modern alternative to dentures when teeth have been lost to disease or injury. Laser dentistry technology can also be used to improve the efficiency of dental implant surgery. However, implants will not be feasible if the underlying bone is too soft or simply insufficient to provide support. The benefits of bone grafting become obvious in such cases. Three primary methods of dental bone grafting are available, a combination of which may be employed.

The Alveolar Ridge Preservation Graft
Often known as a socket graft, this method is used in cases where the original tooth has been removed. An alveolar ridge preservation graft involves an absorption process that can take three to six months until the bone is replaced. The implant can then be fitted into the grafted bone.

The Autogenous Ramus/Chin Graft
This technique, which is also known as a block bone graft, involves the replacement of the bone with a small amount of material that has been removed from the patient's chin or lower jaw. Normally taking about four months to heal, an autogenous ramus/chin graft is useful in cases of excessive bone loss.

The Subantral Graft
This method involves the insertion of bone material through an opening that is surgically made in the sinus area. It is therefore known as a sinus lift. The expanded section will over time restore the structure to allow placement of the implant. Bovine bone can be used to replace what was once human, with the material taken from the cow being carefully processed to ensure proper sterilization.

Making the Right Choice
These different techniques have certain disadvantages, which include infection, pain and further bone loss. However, these problems can be reduced through such modern techniques as laser dentistry. The staff at the Upper Hunt Club Dental Centre in South Ottawa can help you decide whether you are a good candidate for any of these techniques, which may allow you to reap the benefits of bone grafting.
