How Smiling Affects Health

Who does not like to be healthy? Most people often do not realize how difficult life would become if their health suffered and declined. Protecting one's health is usually high on many people's priority lists. The great thing is that the more happiness you experience in your life the longer you live by helping keep your mood balanced, reducing stress and boosting your immune system.

One of the main reasons why this happens is because of smiling and laughter. These two go hand-in-hand in being a positive impact on your health. The human body responds to laughter by eliminating the cortisol from the system. This in turn protects your health from the stress created by the presence of cortisol. This is an insidious chemical that the body produces in situations involving chronic stress.

Stress of any kind can negatively impact health. Effects may include both long-term and immediate consequences. Smiling, acts as a mirror, allowing one person to pass positive feelings onto those around them. The simple act of smiling, even when we might feel like doing it, can change our mood for the better. Endorphins, serotonin, and other chemicals that boost mood and immunity are released from your brain into your body instantaneously, even if your smile lasted only for a split second.

While you might know you are not truly happy in that time frame, the muscles required to make a smile trick your brain by making it react to what it perceives as happiness, resulting in the flooding of the chemicals that help extend one’s happy mood. As many people say: “fake it 'til you make it” and smiling can do just that for you.

People who smile more frequently than the average, about 20 times per day, even though they suffer from long-term, debilitating, or life-threatening diseases, generally experience higher recovery rates than people who smile less. Smiling can benefit everyone, and not just those who suffer from illnesses. It also enhances the lives of those around you, costs nothing, and makes you look more attractive to others in general. So, boost your immune system and live longer by smiling more.
