How Can Swimming in Chlorine Pools Affect Your Teeth?

Swimming is a fun summer activity, a great way to cool off in the heat and an enjoyable way to get exercise. However, while you are relaxing in the water, you may be causing damage to your teeth without even realizing you are doing so. The chlorine found in pools can present a hazard to your teeth if the pH level is not balanced to where it should be.

Short-Term and Long-term Consequences

Chlorine in pools are one of the leading causes of teeth discolouration. The term "swimmer's calculus" refers to the discolouration of front teeth that is often experienced by frequent swimmers. This condition occurs when the pH level of a pool becomes so high that it begins to stain teeth and prevents saliva from cleansing the mouth. Levels of pH that are too high can also lead to softening of the enamel of teeth, resulting in teeth becoming more susceptible to damage and decay. Chlorine also tends to dry out your mouth, which leads to more food particles remaining lodged in between your teeth. This can result in cavities and gum disease.

Over time and prolonged exposure to chlorine, the enamel of your teeth wears down. Weakened enamel can lead to many other dental issues, including cavities, tooth sensitivity and discolouration. Once this enamel is eroded, it cannot be repaired.

There are numerous negative consequences that can result from prolonged exposure to chlorine. In addition to the dental issues of weakened enamel, cavities, tooth sensitivity and discolouration, other health concerns may arise as well. Some of these health concerns include developing allergies or asthma, bladder and rectal cancer and possibly, an increased risk for coronary heart disease.

Preventative Measures
If swimming is an activity you enjoy, it is not necessary to now begin avoiding the pool. Instead, there are measures you can take to protect your teeth from harmful chlorine while swimming. Perhaps the most significant thing you can do to protect your teeth from chlorine damage is to keep your mouth shut as much as possible while swimming. It will be nearly impossible to prevent all water from getting in your mouth, but you can try to limit it as much as possible. If you are swimming with your children, teach them not to drink the pool water or even bring it into their mouth without swallowing. Another important step you can take to prevent chlorine damage is to rinse, brush and floss your teeth as soon as you get out of the pool. Rinsing will help wash away the acid, while brushing and flossing will help strengthen your enamel. Drinking lots of water to ward off dry mouth is another helpful measure to take to protect your teeth. It is also recommended to schedule an extra cleaning and a fluoride treatment with your dentist at the beginning of the summer season. This is a preventative measure that can be taken to help your teeth looking their best during the swimming season.

Tips for Frequent Swimmers
If you are a frequent swimmer, consider using a toothpaste with MI paste and xylitol additives. The calcium and phosphorous found in these products help combat the acidity levels found in chlorine pools. If you cannot find a toothpaste with either of these products in it, baking soda is a good alternative.

If you frequently visit a public pool and worry about the pH level, you can easily test the level using pH testing strips available at most home improvement stores. Also, do not be afraid to ask what method they use to keep the pool water clean. Their answer may help put your mind at ease.
