Common Dental Emergencies

Even individuals who are religious about their dental hygiene probably experience at least one dental emergency in their lifetime. Whether it is a chipped tooth or a bout of sudden jaw pain, today we discuss some of the most common dental emergencies you may encounter.

Chipped tooth - Although they might not cause much pain, a chipped tooth may be somewhat embarrassing if visible. Luckily, these minor issues are often resolved with a filling or bonding with tooth-colored composite resin.

Cracked tooth - When a tooth is cracked or fractured, it is usually quite painful. Depending on the severity of damage, the tooth may need to be removed or a root canal and crown may be necessary.

Infection - If your tooth is sensitive to hot or cold foods or beverages, and you experience persistent throbbing and fever, you may have an infection or abscess. This condition is caused by a bacterial infection of the tooth.

Displaced teeth - When a tooth is displaced, it is misaligned or pushed backward, sideways, forward, or even rotated. Displacement of teeth is most often caused by a traumatic injury and, in some instances, could lead to pulp damage.

Jaw pain - If you experience pain in the jaw, it may be caused by a variety of factors including grinding the teeth during sleep, clenching the jaw due to stress, sinuses, or possibly periodontal disease.

Swelling - When you experience swelling and discomfort of the jaw or mouth, it is most likely the result of an infection of the teeth or gums.

Bleeding - If your gums are inflamed or bleeding, you are likely in the first stages of gingivitis, a condition caused by the buildup of plaque on the teeth.

Avulsed tooth - Avulsion occurs when the tooth is completely detached due to trauma. If the tooth is permanent, replantation should commence as soon as possible.

If you or someone you know is dealing with any of the dental emergencies described above, consider visiting the Upper Hunt Club Dental Centre to discuss treatment options.
